Servers and bartenders
If you sell, serve, or furnish alcoholic beverages in a covered on-premises setting, you are in the core group that needs RBS. That commonly includes bartenders, barbacks who serve, servers, and similar front-of-house roles that put alcohol in a guest's hand.
Managers
Managers who supervise alcohol servers also fall under the RBS requirement in public ABC summaries. If you hire, schedule, or direct servers who pour or deliver drinks, assume you need to check RBS for your own role as well as your team's.
New hires and the 60-day window
Public materials often describe a period after hire during which a new employee must become certified (commonly discussed as 60 days). Do not wait until the last day if your venue needs proof sooner. Start with how to get RBS.
Who usually does not need RBS
Off-premises-only roles, purely kitchen roles with no alcohol service, and jobs outside California are different conversations. ABC's pages define the covered premises and roles. If your job never involves alcohol service or supervising servers, ask your employer before buying training.
RBS vs ServSafe Alcohol
ServSafe Alcohol and similar national alcohol programs are not automatic substitutes for California RBS. California's path uses ABC-approved training and the ABC exam in the ABC RBS Portal. If an employer asks for "alcohol certification," clarify that they mean California RBS.
